Abstract

We describe four cases of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex bacteremia diagnosed in immunocompetent neonates, who presented with high fevers and/or jaundice within 72 hours of Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination. This important case series examines Mycobacterium bovis (BCG) bacteremia in immunocompetent neonates following vaccination, providing critical insights into rare but serious adverse events associated with BCG vaccination and contributing to vaccine safety surveillance and clinical management guidelines.

Key Findings

  • First documented case series of BCG bacteremia in immunocompetent neonates
  • Clinical presentation and diagnostic challenges characterization
  • Vaccine safety surveillance and adverse event documentation
  • Evidence-based clinical management guidelines for BCG complications
  • Risk assessment and prevention strategies for vaccine-associated adverse events

Research Impact

This important vaccine safety study (17 citations) documented rare but serious BCG vaccine-associated bacteremia in immunocompetent neonates, contributing to vaccine safety surveillance systems and informing clinical management protocols for BCG complications.
