Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to upgrade systems for infectious disease surveillance and forecasting and modeling of the spread of infection, both of which are critical for effective public health response and pandemic preparedness. This comprehensive analysis examines the lessons learned from COVID-19 for strengthening infectious disease surveillance systems in the United States, identifying critical gaps exposed during the pandemic and providing evidence-based recommendations for enhancing surveillance infrastructure, data integration, and real-time monitoring capabilities. The research addresses essential improvements needed in surveillance technology, laboratory networks, data sharing protocols, and predictive modeling to better prepare for future infectious disease threats and optimize routine disease detection and response efforts.

Key Findings

  • COVID-19 lessons learned for strengthening US infectious disease surveillance systems
  • Critical surveillance infrastructure gaps and enhancement recommendations
  • Data integration and real-time monitoring capability improvements
  • Laboratory network strengthening and diagnostic capacity building strategies
  • Evidence-based frameworks for pandemic preparedness and response optimization

Research Impact

This timely analysis (8 citations) provided important guidance for strengthening US infectious disease surveillance based on COVID-19 experiences, informing federal and state public health preparedness strategies and surveillance system improvements for enhanced pandemic readiness and routine infectious disease monitoring.
