Abstract

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is characterised by the presence of immune responses to previously acquired Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection without clinical evidence of active tuberculosis. This comprehensive WHO guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for the management of latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection specifically in low tuberculosis burden countries, addressing critical aspects of LTBI screening, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. The guidelines synthesize the latest scientific evidence and expert consensus to inform clinical practice, public health policy, and tuberculosis elimination strategies in settings where targeted LTBI management can significantly contribute to reducing tuberculosis incidence and achieving elimination goals.

Key Findings

  • Evidence-based WHO guidelines for LTBI management in low-burden settings
  • Comprehensive screening, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations for latent TB
  • Risk stratification approaches and targeted intervention strategies
  • Clinical practice standards and public health policy frameworks
  • Tuberculosis elimination strategies through systematic LTBI management

Research Impact

This highly influential WHO guideline (791 citations) has provided authoritative global standards for latent tuberculosis management in low-burden countries, shaping clinical practice, public health policy, and tuberculosis elimination efforts worldwide by establishing evidence-based frameworks for systematic LTBI screening, treatment, and monitoring programs.
