Abstract

We examined five annual cohorts (2007–2011) of men who have sex with men (MSM) attending New York City STD clinics who had negative HIV-1 nucleic acid amplification tests at baseline. This comprehensive cohort study analyzes HIV incidence rates and identifies predictive factors for HIV acquisition among MSM attending public sexually transmitted disease clinics, providing critical data for targeted HIV prevention strategies in high-risk populations.

Key Findings

  • HIV incidence rates among high-risk MSM populations
  • Predictive risk factors for HIV acquisition identified
  • STD clinic-based HIV surveillance methodology
  • Targeted prevention strategy development opportunities
  • Public health clinic HIV testing and prevention integration

Research Impact

This important cohort study (38 citations) provided essential HIV incidence data among MSM in public health settings, informing targeted prevention strategies and risk assessment protocols for high-risk populations in urban environments.
