Abstract

Standard treatment guidelines (STGs) are an important tool for ensuring high quality clinical care and prudent antimicrobial use (AMU) and stewardship (AMS). In 2018, African Union Member States requested that the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention develop continent-specific treatment guidelines. This groundbreaking initiative describes the development of the first edition of African treatment guidelines for common bacterial infections and syndromes, addressing critical gaps in evidence-based clinical management across the African continent. The guidelines provide standardized, Africa-specific recommendations for treating bacterial infections, considering regional antimicrobial resistance patterns, available resources, and healthcare system capacity, while promoting rational antibiotic use and strengthening antimicrobial stewardship programs throughout African healthcare settings.

Key Findings

  • First continent-specific treatment guidelines for bacterial infections in Africa
  • Evidence-based recommendations adapted to African healthcare settings and resources
  • Antimicrobial stewardship integration and rational antibiotic use promotion
  • Regional resistance pattern consideration and treatment optimization strategies
  • Framework for standardized clinical care and quality improvement across Africa

Research Impact

This landmark guideline development (8 citations) provided the first comprehensive, Africa-specific treatment guidelines for bacterial infections, informing national treatment protocols across African countries and establishing frameworks for evidence-based clinical care and antimicrobial stewardship throughout the continent.
