Vaccine effectiveness describes how well a vaccine performs in real-world conditions, where people differ in age, health status, exposure risk, and timing since vaccination.

Effectiveness is related to, but different from, vaccine efficacy. Efficacy is usually measured in controlled clinical trials; effectiveness is measured after a vaccine is used in broader populations. Public health officials use effectiveness data to understand protection against infection, severe disease, hospitalization, or death.
