Why Cats, Parasites, and Fertility Are Suddenly in the Same Conversation
For years, online commentators have mocked so-called “cat ladies” while also lamenting declining birth rates. But science suggests there could be an unexpected, biological thread linking cats and fertility: a parasite known as Toxoplasma gondii.
This microscopic organism, which infects an estimated one-third of the world’s human and animal populations, can live inside a person’s tissues for life. While best known for its risks during pregnancy and for people with weakened immune systems, new research is raising questions about whether Toxoplasma could also affect male fertility.
What Is Toxoplasma Infection?
Toxoplasma gondii has two main routes of human infection:
- Cat exposure: Cats shed microscopic eggs in their feces, which can linger in litter boxes, soil, or water. Humans may ingest them through contact with contaminated hands, food, or surfaces.
- Undercooked meat: Cysts containing dormant parasites can survive in undercooked or raw meat, infecting humans who consume it.
Once inside the body, the parasite can form cysts in tissues such as the brain, muscles, and reproductive organs. While often asymptomatic, this lifelong infection has been studied for its potential impact on neurological function, mental health, and, now, reproduction.

The Biological Basis for Infertility Concerns
Animal research provides strong evidence that Toxoplasma can affect reproduction. Infected animals—including mice, rats, and rams—have shown:
- Colonization of the testes and epididymis
- Cyst formation in reproductive organs
- Direct sperm damage
- Chronic inflammation impairing sperm function
These findings make it biologically plausible that Toxoplasma could contribute to infertility in men.
What Human Studies Have Found So Far
Research in humans has been more limited, and so far mostly cross-sectional—snapshots in time rather than long-term studies. Results include:
- Prague, 2021: Higher infertility rates among 163 Toxoplasma-infected men (49%) compared with 506 uninfected men (42%).
- China, 2002: Among 100 infertile men, 36% were infected versus 14% of fertile men.
- Chinese couples study: Higher infection rates in 178 infertile couples (35%) versus 190 fertile couples (12%).
While these studies suggest an association, they don’t yet prove causation.
The Epidemiologist’s Caution: Association vs. Causation
In epidemiology, proving causation requires more than correlation. Researchers look for:
- Temporality: Infection occurring before infertility develops
- Dose-response: Greater exposure to the parasite leading to higher infertility risk
So far, these patterns have not been demonstrated in humans. Additionally, infertility rates appear to be rising while Toxoplasma infection rates are stable or declining—arguing against a direct causal link.
What Should Men—and Couples—Do?
For now, there is no recommendation that men with infertility undergo testing or treatment for Toxoplasma. But prevention measures are universally useful and low-risk:
- Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly
- Cook meat fully before eating
- Handle cat litter carefully, ideally with gloves (and avoid it altogether during pregnancy)
These steps not only reduce Toxoplasma risk but also protect against a wide range of foodborne infections.
The idea that cats could influence human fertility is intriguing but far from proven. While animal studies suggest a biological mechanism, human research remains inconclusive. Larger, prospective studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Until then, simple hygiene practices remain the best safeguard.
