A set of interventions (e.g., PPE, vaccination, hand hygiene) used together to reduce disease transmission.
What is an Infection Control Bundle?
An infection control bundle refers to a set of evidence-based practices that, when implemented together, are proven to prevent healthcare-associated infections more effectively than when applied individually. The concept comes from patient safety and quality improvement. A “bundle” is not just a checklist. It is a small group of critical actions that must all be performed reliably and consistently every time.
Infection control bundles are most commonly used in hospitals and other healthcare settings to prevent specific types of infections like bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia, or catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
Healthcare settings are both places of healing and hotspots for dangerous infections, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Despite decades of research, preventing these infections often fails not because we don’t know what to do, but because what we know is not done consistently.
How Infection Control Bundles Work
Bundles are a strategy to overcome that. They distill complex clinical guidelines into a few essential, practical actions that teams can apply reliably.
Example: CLABSI (Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection) Prevention Bundle
- Hand hygiene before catheter insertion.
- Using full barrier precautions (gloves, gown, mask, sterile drape).
- Cleaning the insertion site with chlorhexidine.
- Choosing the best insertion site to reduce infection risk.
- Removing the catheter as soon as it’s no longer needed.
Other Common Infection Control Bundles
- Ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention bundle.
- Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention bundle.
- Surgical site infection prevention bundle.
- Respiratory infection prevention bundle (COVID-19, influenza).
- Environmental cleaning and disinfection bundle.
Bundles emphasize measurement, feedback, and culture change, turning infection prevention from an individual task into a shared team responsibility.
Impact and Recent Applications
- In the U.S., CLABSI bundles cut infection rates in intensive care units by over 50% over the past decade.
- During COVID-19, some hospitals used respiratory infection bundles, combining masking, eye protection, ventilation improvements, and hand hygiene.
- Bundles continue to evolve to address antimicrobial resistance and emerging threats.
